The Department of Medical/Surgical (MedSurg) at Kamuzu College of Nursing takes pride in
the rich tradition of excellence and being the core department for faculty of nursing. We aim to
advance and encourage excellent teaching, research, professional growth in the context of the
vision and mission of the college. Our long and distinguished legacy of research, offering
expertise and training dates back to the late 1979 when the college was established. Since then
MedSurg has grown into a large academic department with all of our programs taking a personal
approach to providing the highest quality education and hands-on experience for future leaders
and practitioners of our speciality.
As part of KCN, we prepare future leaders in Nursing by offering broad-based training in
Orthopaedic nursing, theatre nursing, adult nursing, community nursing, psychiatric nursing, med-surgical nursing, ethics in nursing, infection prevention and professionalism among others. Our
department’s expertise covers a broad range that spans from discovery in fundamental nursing to
innovation in clinical application.
Our modernised curriculum is designed to ensure that our students are fit for purpose, with training and services delivered in facilities across the health
system.
We strive to produce nursing practitioners who are technically competent, interested in the overall well-being of their patients and knowledgeable of the literature in the field rendering
relevant community services that are related to nursing in general.
