This module introduces students to the concept of environment, environmental health and the issues and tools of intervention in solving environmental health problems. It covers the history, development and scope of environmental health and explores issues of professionalism, global environmental problems, relationship between environmental health and other health related disciplines. Learners will be able to describe the links between the environment and human health and will confidently discuss the main environmental health activities. They will also be able to deal with specialists such as civil and public heath engineers and Environmental Health Officers with whom they come in contact during their work.

Aims of the module

Upon completion of this module learners will be able to:

• describe milestones in the development of environmental health nationally, regionally and globally in relation to the current situation.
• differentiate key definitions and key concepts in Environmental Health and their relationship with key definitions and concepts in other health delivery practice to show similarities and differences in their application
• identify and discuss major environmental health activitie
• apply knowledge and intellectual skills of the major environmental health activities in the management of community health programs.
• apply acquired skills to identify and assess Environmental health problems and evaluate actions designed to improve such problems
• formulate Environmental health strategies and approaches to Environmental health problems which are appropriate to different cultures and environments
