This module is designed to assist the learner to analyse philosophical and theoretical perspectives in healthcare. Emphasis will be placed on examining the development of the philosophy of science as it relates to the evolution of nursing and other health care related disciplines, including theory development, and its application to health care research and practice. The interrelationships among philosophy, theory development, research, and practice will be analysed as they relate to nursing and other health related disciplines.

MODULE AIMS

The module has 4 units. As you are using this module, you are expected to do the following:

  • Read widely in the content area, using all available resources, including collaboration with colleagues.
  • Complete activities for each unit in the order in which they are presented
  • Keep notes from readings, presentations, and other assignments throughout the program as these can be useful for examination.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of the module, the learner will:

  • Analyse philosophies of science and knowledge development
  • Explain the evolution of concepts and relationship to theory development
  • Evaluate selected conceptual frameworks, theories related to nursing and other related health care professions
  • Explicate the relationships among theory, research and practice
