Training and Research (AITRP) Programme Program Director : Dr

This program was funded by Forgarty in 2000. The UIC-AITRP partners for
AIDS research capacity building with institutions in Chile, China,
Indonesia and Kamuzu College of Nursing at the University of Malawi. At
UIC, this is a joint program between the UIC College of Nursing and
School of Public Health. Currently the program is sponsoring 3 PhD
students and has already sponsored one Masters graduate. Other incountry
AITRP training opportunities include workshops in AIDS research methods,
ethics support for post doctoral studies for Malawi scholars at UIC and
support for US minority AIDS research internships in Malawi.
The AIDS Research Program : Principal Investigator and Project Director
: Dr Chrissie P.N Kaponda and Dr Judith Levy of UIC. This program was
funded in 2002 by National Center for Complementary and Alternative
Medicine (NCCAM) through the NIH Partnership in Africa Initiative. The
program is designed to build research excellence at KCN that facilitates
innovative behavioural science research to improve the effectiveness of
AIDS prevention care and support in Malawi. The program offers research
support to Malawi and International investigators and sponsors three
behavioral science HIV/AIDS pilot projects.
Other collaborating institutions. KCN is now in the process of
developing other collaborations with the University of San Fransisco,
California School of Nursing and the School of Nursing at the University
of North Carolina to address issues of collaborative research, nursing
education and practice.
