Minority International Research Training (MIRT) Programme

Program Director : Professor Beverly McElmurry of UIC :
Country Mentor : Dr Chrissie Kaponda

Kamuzu College of Nursing serves as one of the Host Sites for US minority students to participate in Research funded by National Institutes of Health. The Global Network of WHO designated Nursing and Midwifery collaborating Centers identify USA research trainees and international host sites for the conduct of research . Selected faculty from the USA centers serve as members of an Advisory Committee to recruit trainees and identify research sites and investigators in other countries.

The MIRT trainees are placed with international investigators according to the best fit between skills and future goals of the trainee. KCN was identified as a host site because of its NIH funded research projects and Dr Chrissie P.N Kaponda is the in Country Coordinator and mentor of the foreign researchers. As more people get funded, more mentors will be identified for the MIRT Program. So far, the college has mentored five USA minority students from various colleges of nursing in the USA.
